All New Terios and All New Toyota Rush Modifications –
Wheel Modification
Beautifying the appearance of your favorite car is commonplace for those who want to look more personal. Most often acted on the exterior, namely replacing the rim with a larger or wider size. But not infrequently the changes made have a negative impact. Among other things, the steering wheel vibrates when the car is driven at high speed. This is what Laksmi experienced with the All New Toyota Rush TRD, which she just bought in early February 2019, and immediately replaced the aftermarket rims. “When running above 100 km / h on the highway, the steering wheel vibrates. Even though when I replaced the rims, the rims were still 17 inches but wider, the rims had already been balanced,” said the resident of Depok, West Java. So where’s the problem? “It could be that when replacing aftermarket rims, the center ring is not included. This additional device must be installed if the rim axle hole is larger than the car’s default rim.
That’s so that the rim is installed straight on the wheel hub. If it shifts a little, it can cause vibrations when the car is moving,” said Iqbal, from F20 Wheels in Margonda, Depok. The reason is, without a center ring, the rim only rests on the wheel bolts, so that when installed, the position of the rim is prone to shifting, aka not centering. Even if the shift is only a fraction of a millimeter, the effect is huge! “It will cause vibrations, especially at high speeds,” said Iqbal. If this is allowed to stand, it can be fatal, namely the wheel bolts can break. Iiih.. scary! Generally, this center ring is available in pekek and tire shops. The size of the outer and inner diameter of the center ring depends on the axle hole of the aftermarket rim used and the center hub of your car’s wheel. The price is around IDR 200 – 250 thousand for the four wheels (4 pieces). However, if you have used this additional device, vibrations still appear on the steering wheel, try doing high-speed balancing on all four wheels. This way of balancing is different from ordinary balancing (the wheels are removed, then they are balanced on the balancing machine). “In the high-speed balancing technique, the wheels are balanced in the mounted position on the underside of the car using a special machine,” Andri, head of the Nawilis workshop branch in Parung, South Tangerang, told us some time ago.
PREVENT WATER SPLASH OR MUD
Another thing to consider when replacing a larger or wider rim, is the risk of splashes of water or mud going up the side of your car’s body. Especially for rims with offsets that are more out of standard rims, or at least flush with the lip of the fender. So, for All New Rush owners who change rims with a width of 7 or 7.5 inches and an offset of 40, even though the outer wall of the tire looks flush with the lip of the fender, try to pay attention to the bottom of the rear fender. Definitely the wheels look a bit off the fenders. This can result in water or mud splashing on the body when driving in rainy conditions. Outsmart, you can install mud guards on all four fenders. Understandably, this mud splash protection device from the manufacturer is not available for the All New Rush. But how come there are those who sell them in the market, one of which is a product produced by JSL, which is made of ABS plastic. The price is around Rp. 250-300 thousand following pairs. But if you want to save money, you can redeem it at the online shop, which costs only IDR 200,000.
After all, how to install it is not difficult, because it still uses a plastic nail fastener under the All New Rush’s default fender. This also works for the All New Daihatsu Terios. Okay, let’s start from the front first. Before carrying out the process of installing the mud guard, turn the front wheel until it is stuck first, with the position of the rear wheel going under the fender. This makes the installation process easier. Then pry the plastic nails fastening the bottom end of the sideskirt using a min screwdriver (Fig.1). Continuing to install the mud guard, which already has 3 mounting holes for the fixing bolts. Now, the plastic nail for fixing the panel under the fender was positioned into the hole for the largest fastening bolt (in the middle) on the mud guard. While the other two small holes (top and bottom), for metal screws which will be plugged into the under fender panel using a screwdriver plus (Fig.2). The installation process is also the same as the other front fender. Meanwhile, on the rear fender, there are two plastic nails that must be removed, namely the inside (Fig.3). The other one is at the base under the fender (Fig.4). After that, all that remains is to attach the mud guard using the two plastic nails. Then it is strengthened again with two iron screws in the mounting holes provided. Oh yes, for installing these iron screws, you can use a short min screwdriver or use a L socket wrench (Fig. 5). You can also remove the rear tire first Want to try?
